It's hard to believe how good it is especially for the price. It in fact is just plain good. It would have to be more than twice the price I would consider passing on it. I've tasted a lot more expensive stuff than this that I didn't care as much for.

I am all over looking for the Craganmore, Glenfarcas and Oban 14 you suggest.

My wife and I tried Auchentoshan over the weekend and really liked it. Just thought the world could use some non-industry approved whisky reviews and a couple years later here we are.

As for good cheap blended Scotch, it is becoming a real challenge as of late. One that is pretty good but in not great distribution is Te Bheag. Teacher's Highland Cream is a shadow of its former great self, but still a pretty decent economy blend. White Horse is the leader in this category, but is hard to come by. Not sure where you live but it is in a number of US states.

As for single malts, there are so many good ones. I think you should try in the following order the following:

Glenmorangie Nectar D'OR 12 yrs
Cragganmore 12
Glenfarclas 17
Highland Park 12 (try the 15 is available where you are)
Oban 14
Glenlivet 18 (good stuff)

Cheers!

Jason
Jason Deblyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13305087714773608306noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8176940657289976265.post-82197634237381573272016-04-11T15:59:57.941-03:002016-04-11T15:59:57.941-03:00I love your website. Up until a few months ago I drank both of those brands without ever realizing that either were considered Scotch. I just thought of them as some sort of plain whiskey. Over the years I have claimed to others that I didn't think I liked Scotch since I didn't care for the Cutty & Sark my parents drank but never realizing that two of my favorite drinks were Scotch blends. So, I am new to much of this but I am learning. I am trying to find three or four of the best cheap blends and three or four of the best more expensive single malts. The White Horse sounds very interesting but I haven't been able to find it anywhere so far. I'll keep looking.

Thanks again to you for all of the help and information you provide.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04123957182260079802noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8176940657289976265.post-59302149948343570772016-02-21T22:16:31.847-04:002016-02-21T22:16:31.847-04:00Thanks for having me, Jason. I just recently starting buying scotch, and it's been very helpful. I have a question that seems to have been hinted at in some of the comments here: any word on whether Lagavulin--or any Islay malt--is still in this blend? I went to a liquor store in North Carolina yesterday and noticed that the back label mentioned neither Lagavulin, Caol Ila, nor Islay itself. Just an age statement. Am I right in assuming that if Lagavulin were in it at all, they'd have it on the bottle? As other folks have said: there's no Black Bottle or Islay Mist available in the state ABC shops here, which makes me hope this one could be a substitute.

Thanks,
TravisAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8176940657289976265.post-91038878544061438262014-12-21T13:03:16.472-04:002014-12-21T13:03:16.472-04:00Friend, I got some bad news for you.

I have not had the new Black Bottle, but I hear it is not as good as it used to be. If I were you, I would buy them anyway and judge for yourself.

The blend that I like of late is Black Grouse. They tinkered with that blend too. The local liquor store stopped carrying it because "no one drinks it". I guess I must have been the only one buying it!. After the disappointment of hearing that, I went back to JW Red and was not disappointed, but it wasn't the peaty blend of WH and was almost $10 per handle. To get back to more of what my budget is, I tried some Grants and wasn't overly sold as a viable replacement.
