As a scotch drinker I started to try out rums and read certain rum sites (Capn Jimbos rum project) being one of the first that I ran across.

I had heard of the 5 types and the hard hitters that had been around for centuries. (rum being only known to me as "captain morgain" or "Barcadi" brands
My first try was "Mount Gay eclipse" and since then, it is my everyday drink when it comes to rum. Ive tried many of the others and they are good. But for the price comparison and everyday mixer or just a sipper, MGE is the way to go.
So far, every person Ive let try the drink (when I have a bottle, and with skepticism and that look like Im joking) have ended up telling me, its smooth and quite easy to drink.
I had a guy once ask me that his sister just turned 21 and wanted to know a good 80 proof liquor but was easy to drink. I told him, for your moneys worth, get her MGE.
To this day, he tells me, its her favorite drink for mixing and drinking neat.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16195596460579416326noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8176940657289976265.post-61593074803401697472012-04-20T21:09:45.053-03:002012-04-20T21:09:45.053-03:00I couldn't agree more. I don't drink much rum but when I do, I want the dark rum and Mount Gay is excellent and inexpensive.Zebsterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17684616018807468693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8176940657289976265.post-74724438776594930372011-01-22T04:30:42.935-04:002011-01-22T04:30:42.935-04:00I am lucky and have family who works for Remy Coin...I am lucky and have family who works for Remy Cointreau, so get to try bottles I could never afford or appreciate. One of those bottles was the MG 1703 old cask selection. I have tried Mount Gay many times and really like it but have never been much of a rum guy. Trying this bottle it tasted very different than rums I have had before, very rich and i would say bourbon like. I think it would be a great try for any whiskey drinker like us. I think it is a little sweeter than I would normally like but was a true pleasure to try. I do not know if it is mostly marketing that gives it it's price but based on flavors alone I was quite impressed.Erikhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04962746688160225493noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8176940657289976265.post-78251240025214852452011-01-15T00:26:33.550-04:002011-01-15T00:26:33.550-04:00As should be evident from the name of our humble w...As should be evident from the name of our humble website, our focus and love is rum, so I'm sure our readers were surprised when we added a small and relatively incompetent section on whisky.

This section was added, as after some years of reviewing rums, we became somewhat disillusioned over the issue of unlabeled additives, such as vanilla, glycerol, sherry and other flavorings. These of course are a sacrilege in the world of whisky. Thus, we added the whisky section to point out why the few truly pure rums should be valued.

Back to Mount Gay. You have stumbled upon a treasure. There are five styles of rum, and Barbadian, or Bajan is one of them. There are few, if any, who would not agree that Mount Gay Extra Old should be the reference rum for the Bajan style.

So much so that the lowly Eclipse is related to mixer status. We too fell for this miscategorization until one day at a beach bar here in Ft. Lauderdale I wanted to order a snifter of rum, and Elipse was all they had.

What a surprise. Though no competition for the world class MGXO, the Eclipse was pleasantly youthful and quite a pleasant sipper.

A nose of nice light leather, oak, molasses, a bit of cane, and a honeyed vanillan. The smooth honey carried through to the early palate, followed by the vanillan and a late warm clove. The finish was shorter but nicely hot - a lovely clove. Mount Gay Eclipse Gold Rum left a lingering impression of the entire experience.

Good work.Capn Jimbo's Rum Projecthttp://rumproject.com/rumforum/noreply@blogger.com
