Note on Distillation
The spirit was distilled three times. Once run though the wash still and twice through the spirit still. Usually triple distillation will produce a lighter and smoother whisky. Not here. This whisky is powerful and interesting but never smooth which is fine with me.

Nose (undiluted)
Buttercups, floral, vanilla, fruity. (Well balanced nose. Nothing offensive here.)

Palate (undiluted)
Ripe tangerines, ginger, apricot jam, pears, pear juice, lemons and peppery.

Finish (undiluted)
Soft caramel, creamy, salt and deep oak and malt. A long finish.

General Impressions
Excellent! Complexity abounds as the flavours of apricot and pear marry with salt and pepper.

Highly recommended!

Cheers!

  1. Hi, Jason.
Your videos and texts have lots of information that indicate the good quality of a whisk(e)y, but you mentioned bad qualities some occasions. I don’t get find them.
I vaguely remember something about sensation of scratching or that taste like...
If you understand that it's interesting, could you write about it?
    Best regards,

    1. Bad whisky is invariably due to poor wood management and young whisky that needs more time. The combination of the two leads to a flavor I liken to carmelized onions or wasabi. Yep, pretty bad!

  2. Hi Jason
    Love your blog.
Have just watched the documentary 'Scotch" mostly about Jim McEwan Bowmore and Bruichladdich. Excellent viewing. One of the contributors was from Deanston distillery. Have searched your blog for reviews but nothing came up. Are you planning any tastings?
    Thanks

    1. Yeah, I know. Part laziness, part busy with a start-up venture thats going nowhere, so I think I will return to what I like to do best: write whisky reviews!

I will be back next week with a new review. Promise!
